The purpose of this blog is to inform the reader about all the facets of the IIM admission process and its eligibility criteria.

It is an accepted fact that the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad is the most sought-after institute for management programs in India.

The full-time Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), a two-year flagship program of IIMA is the toughest MBA program to crack. The objective of the PGP in Management is to equip students with conceptual knowledge to teach interpersonal skills and develop a deep sense of social purpose for managerial decision-making.

The students are groomed to observe honesty and maintain integrity beyond doubt, in all their dealings.

IIM admission process involves consideration of the applicable Common Admission Test (CAT)/ Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) exam scores, past academic performance, and performance in the analytical writing test(AWT) & personal interviews(PI).

MBA eligibility criteria for Post-graduate Programme (PGP) in Management :

A candidate should possess a Bachelor’s degree of a minimum of three years of education with 50% marks or equivalent CGPA( 45% in case of Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/Persons with Disabilities (PwD) category from any recognized University.

MBA eligibility criteria also provide that a candidate appearing for the final year bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification examination and those who have completed the degree requirements and are awaiting results can also apply subject to the condition of submitting the mark sheet and certificate before the prescribed deadline.

Requirement of CAT entrance exam score for domestic candidates :

The CAT exam is compulsory for domestic applicants.

Requirement of GMAT entrance exam score for overseas Indian applicants, & foreign nationals :

For overseas Indian applicants, & foreign nationals, however, instead of the CAT entrance exam score, GMAT  entrance exam scores are mandatory.

    The IIM admission process :

IIM admission process for admission to the PGP involves shortlisting of candidates for the Analytical Writing Test (AWT) and Personal Interview (PI) from among the candidates who have a valid CAT entrance exam score. Foreign nationals (foreign passport holders) staying in India must take the current version of the GMAT Exam and should apply through the Supernumerary Quota category.

The IIM admission process for admission to the PGP in Management involves the stage of preliminary screening by taking into account the individual marks scored by candidates in the three sections of the CAT exam viz. ‘Quantitative Ability’ (QA), ‘Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning’ (DILR), and ‘Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension’ (VARC). Only the candidates who score above the prescribed minimum cut-offs in the sectional percentile ranks, the overall percentile rank, and obtaining a positive (greater than zero) raw score in all sections of CAT are considered for the subsequent stages.

The application Rating score of the candidates is taken into account during the different stages of the IIM admission process.

The IIM admission process takes into account the following rating scores:

Rating Score for the 10th Std. Examination (Rating Score A); Rating Scores for the 12th Std. Examination (Rating Score B); Rating Scores for the Bachelor’s Degree Examination (Rating Score C); Rating Scores for Work Experience (Rating Score D).

Thus, the Application Rating Score: AR is the combined total of all the above components i.e. A+B+C+D.

The IIM admission process, for different streams viz., ‘Science’, ‘Commerce’ and ‘Arts & Humanities’)/disciplines consider the equivalent Application Rating scores (AR) which are arrived at by taking into account various parameters including percentile equivalence of the score distributions.

The IIM admission process also considers such candidates who are appearing for the final year bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification examination. The % of marks are computed based on their available marks.

The IIM admission process, in case of such candidates who have cleared CA/ICWA/CS or Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of India (FIAI) without having a bachelor’s degree, considers the aggregate final % of marks of all the level examinations as their available marks.

The IIM admission process recognizes exceptional candidates based on their past academic records & their performance in the CAT exam across diverse academic backgrounds.

A certain number of the ranking candidates from each of the academic disciplines are shortlisted for the Analytical Writing Test(AWT) and Personal Interview(PI) based on the composite score which is derived by applying the weightage of multiplication factors under:-

    Application Rating Multiplication Factor for Composite Score (ARF_CS) = 0.35;

CAT Multiplication Factor for Composite Score (CATF_CS) = 0.65.

Further, an additional number of candidates from each category (General, NC-OBC, SC, ST, and PWD) are shortlisted for AWT & PI on the basis of the composite scores subject to their fulfilling the criteria.

IIM admission process- Final Selection :

The final selection of the candidates is done based on their ‘Final Composite Scores (FCS) separately of each category(General/SC/ST/NC-OBC/PwD) which is arrived at in the following manner:-

Personal Interview Multiplication Factor (PIF) = 0.50; AWT Multiplication Factor (AWTF) = 0.10; CAT Score Multiplication Factor for Final Composite Score (CATF_FCS)=0.25; Application Rating Multiplication Factor for Final Composite Score (ARF_FCS) = 0.15

IIM admission process culminates in offering admission letters to the successful candidates. After the AWT & PI round, admission offers are made by IIMA to successful candidates.

The entire IIM admission process is a foolproof process involving overall performance in CAT, performance in AWT & PI, academic, & work experience, etc.
